Catapulting Commissions Sales Talk with Anthony Garcia

Sep 30, 2020

This week, on the Catapulting Commissions Podcast, Anthony is sitting down with Mindset Coach, speaker, and author of “Take the Leap,” Heather Hakes. She’s reached tens of thousands through her international podcast, Mind Over Matter, and specializes in helping others get out of their own way by awakening their infinite potential to create their ideal life. She manifested six-figures after taking the leap to quit corporate by aligning with her true passion and purpose and is now on a mission to help others overcome self-doubt through her transformative coaching programs, retreats, and courses.

Heather truly believes that we create our own reality through mindset and how we position ourselves in our lives. The thoughts we think and the habits we have make up what we experience. It’s important to realize if you’re living in autopilot or if you’ve got a solid certainty in yourself.

At 30 years old, Heather was living the American Dream life, but internally, she was miserable. This lead her to her own spiritual awakening and gave her the perspective that perhaps she was living someone else’s dream and chasing someone else’s goals. She knew from a young age she wanted to be a teacher and her passions lived there. In reality, teaching comes in so many forms--speaking, coaching, empowering--and in the end, that passion is what got her where she is and will get you across the line.

It’s easy to get stuck in a rut of negativity in the sales world. Pressures from every direction can take a toll on an individual. The first step out of that rut is to stop comparing yourself to others. Turn the focus internally and understand what your driver is. Are you driven by achievement? Are you passionate about the product you’re selling? Get clear on what motivates you. It also comes down to this: rejection is redirection. When you’re told “no” know that there is a bigger “yes” down the road. There are a million reasons someone could say no, don’t get stuck thinking it’s a personal thing.

Once you have a “why” dig down into layers to what builds it up. Maybe your why is to make more money, but what does that mean? Does it mean more time with your family? More time to pursue passions? Financial freedom? Getting a robust “why” is a great way to build a solid foundation for a positive mentality.

Staying committed to that “why” is absolutely difficult. Imposter syndrome is a big player in the sales game. Heather suggests getting a mentor--someone you can bounce ideas off of and get creative. Think about how you can make growing yourself as a person fun. Stop replaying a story that hinders your progress. You don’t go to the gym once and get perfect biceps--it takes work and effort to build that confidence and certainty--but it’s a choice you have to make. Heather embodies the mindset with meditation, running, affirmations, and routine. When you’re clear and have a roadmap, you can see yourself in situations that favor you.

Skillset and mindset are two important parts of successful sales practices. Many people are focused on the quick-fix; the how-to. Heather believes in authenticity first. Don’t try to be a second rate version of someone else--your personality is what is going to close. If you don’t have the mindset and the belief that you can close a sale, none of the skills matter. There is a lot of ego involved with this, but it’s important to recognize that you can’t see your own blind spots. Athletes at the highest level have mindset coaching, why shouldn’t sales professionals? Visually rehearsing success can help you pave the way for it to be manifested. If you can do that consistently, you’re going to create your own reality. Hold yourself accountable--are you having a bad week or one bad call? Don’t create negative momentum--that leads to getting stuck in a rut.

With so much uncertainty taking place, maintaining a strong mindset can prove a challenge. Heather talks about focusing on what you CAN control. You cannot control the external state, you can control your internal thoughts and language. It’s an opportunity to adapt and innovate. It’s all about perspective. Flex your creative muscle and maneuver around what you can do.
